These pumps come in three classes, which all feature carbon vanes to protect the pump liner. The pumps also have a built-in regulator that maintains a relatively constant outlet pressure while at the same time provides a bypass system, allowing an electric boost pump to supply fuel to the engine on start-up, as well as in the event the pump malfunctions.
